Rob Bell is great IMHO, I fully recommend the Mars Hill podcast - http://feeds.feedburner.com/marshill/podcast challenging and bible based teaching, again, IMHO, excellent.

Hazel

Thanks for sharing this. I am moved, appalled and compassionate in equal measure, I sit stunned and bemused at the possibility of having to come face to face with such a decision. I also think, there but for the grace of God go I.

I also wondered at the meaning of the word 'swithering', though I too am 'profoundly glad it wasn’t my responsibility' and pray it never will be. To be in the position to have to choose whether or not to take life away is a position only God should be in, not humans.

Please can I use the small section about Robert Latimer in my sermon at Mansfield on Sunday??

Love, Grace & Peace

What a profoundly moving post related in such an objective manner. Like you, I just wanted to reach out to Mr Latimer - and the rest of his family - and hold him tight. NO ONE has the right to judge, just as NO ONE can feel HIS pain. Where is compassion in the legal system that has dragged this out for so long?
Those of us viewing these cases should not be judging, we should be thanking our lucky stars/God/Allah/Whoever that we are fortunate enough not to be in that position and hoping for the best outcome for those involved.
Stumbled on your blog through various links (can't even remember where I started!) and glad I did as your posts are very thought-provoking.

Oh, Hazel, that's so very kind of you! Thank you! Chairing the SoA in Scotland has been very rewarding but has definitely stopped me writing as much as I should/need/want so I am looking forward to finishing. But people like you are part of what has made it worthwhile. Thank you!

I think Bennett's great too. It is strange, that he has at first hearing a rather languorous voice, but the nature of his writing compels you to listen.
I loved his true account of The Lady in the Van.
A great quote you've chosen- I shall copy that into my journal.

Hi Hazel,
Only just discovered your blog today. Never been one for chat lines etc. but felt compelled to add a comment today.
I think you are an amazing writer. When I finish most books, including yours, I feel the writer has given me a gift, truly a part of themselves, for indeed they have. Writers like you enable people to experience avenues of life which they would never go down normally..
Sometimes I have written an article e.g. when I was teaching or for a Writers' Group. Occasionally I've felt pleased with it, even be told "That's brilliant", but I know I could never sustain the focus, energy, vitality, depth of research that you pour into every novel. It's so sad that some people feel they need to put others down, instead of celebrating their achievements.I suppose the only solace you can feel is that they must feel rather inferior and also jealous, so they need to expound on their own missed opportunities for brilliance by saying ( bitchily)that they had "more impoortant things to do".

Dear Dr. McHaffie,

I'm a neonatologist on the faculty at the University of Colorado school of medicine, and I'm also an associate faculty member at the CU Center for Bioethics and Humanities.

One special interest of mine is prenatal consultations with families who have received a diagnosis of serious fetal anomalies. My colleague, Nancy English, PhD RN, and I have met with approximately 100 patients over the past three years.

I've been developing an ethical framework which can guide our conversations with these families. The intent of the framework is to address bioethical principles, professional duties, and styles of conversations. Our hypothesis is that the child's prognosis (or burdens/benefits ratio) can guide our work.

My wife Barbara and I will be traveling in Scotland during mid-July, and I am wondering if there might be an opportunity for me to share a cup of coffee or tea with you at some point.

If you might have an hour or so during the week of the 20th of July, please drop me a note. It would be wonderful to meet with you.
